Orlov - Epishin Needing 3.5 out of 4 (including games against the three GMs), for a GM norm, Orlov pushed hard with White, but the passed d-pawn became a burden to defend, and Black's exposed king became an active king.
Ivkov + Herder The GM worried the annoying weakness at a6 until it became a festering sore and eventually it fell.
Vetemaa - Donaldson Needing to win the rest of his games for a GM norm (and it is not clear how he will play the opponents he needs to attain the required Category 7), Donaldson eked a tiny advantage out of the opening. Observers stated that Vetemaa could have drawn by continuing to defend the a6-pawn from behind, but he tricked himself into defending it from the side.
Gligoric + Gibney The knights never got going. An interesting sideplay was all the rooks on the knight files.
