Open Section Crosstable
Under-2000, Under-1700 Section Crosstables

Pairings for Day Five

Since there is a round in the accelerated schedule at 9:00, we may not get the pairings up much before 4 pm.

Tournament organizer Toni Deline informs us that he spoke with Jaan Ehlvest on the phone Monday morning. GM Ehlvest regrets that, because of passport problems, he will be late in arriving in Vancouver and will not be able to play in the tournament. Instead he will be giving a simul, Monday May 22nd.

Day Four top games

Epishin = Ivkov The first meeting between GMs resulted in a tough battle where in a simplified position Epishin tried to make something out of his advanced pawn centre, but Ivkov kept hitting him with counterplay and simplifications to hold the balance

Berry + Stanford Because of the odd number again, I continued to play, and met Stanford, who would have been a "norm killer" for John Donaldson. As it is, with the non-participation of Ehlvest, it is only a very narrow path and a 7-2 score that could lead to a 9-game GM norm.

My recollection is that Black is supposed to play Nf6-e8-c7-e6-d4, and to respond to a2-a3 with a7-a5. As it was, after Be3-f4 (intending perhaps to support the pawn wedge with Bg2-h3), White has a slight pull, but Black's blocking the position with e6-e5 and g6-g5 is a recipe for disaster.

Harmon - Gligoric After a tough game, the cream rose to the top.

Donaldson + Basanta Basanta lost a pawn and got a bad bishop, but fought like a tiger. In the long run, he could have done with a few more tigers on the board.

Leader Board

3.5-0.5 Ivkov
3-1 Orlov, Gligoric, Donaldson, Berry, Milicevic
2-1 Fullbrook
2.5-1.5 Epishin, Herder, Sokourinski, Stanford
3-2 Poitras

Players in the Accelerated schedule begin play Wednesday morning, and some of them (including some readers of this chronicle, hint, hint) will undoubtedly join the Leader Boards.

Register 8 to 8:30 am Wednesday. Or please consult the schedule.
